Retirement, health, allowances, unemployment, education… what are 1000 euros in taxes for?

Income tax is not the first source of public money! It is far behind VAT and even further behind social security contributions. Once the various taxes and other levies have been put into the common pot of public money, how are the expenses allocated? Bercy simulates a schematic distribution for 1000 euros.

What are my taxes used for? It is the Minister of Economy and Finance himself who asks this question. The objective is obviously to do educational work so that the general public understands the usefulness of paying taxes and other taxes. After unveiling a ddi website in 2018Bercy is using the same formula this year with a interactive tool (my daily taxes) o you choose a fireplace profile that looks like you… and Bercy gives you some information on the usefulness of public money and the aid you benefit from on a daily basis. Example: how much does a year at college cost if you have a child at this school level, how much does a hospital cost, a museum, a library, an energy check, the cost of legal proceedings, etc.

The other section of this new educational mini-site, magnifying glassis more classic and uses the formula already used in 2018: detail who pays taxes (for 100 euros of public money, 38 euros from households, 28 euros from companies, VAT, etc.), detail which taxes and duties weigh the most heavy (in order of social contributions, VAT, CSG, income tax, corporation tax, property tax, etc.) and finally how are 1000 euros of public money used.

Note: Bercy uses for this exercise the figures of the expenses 2019. Why not more recent data? The exceptional consequences of the health crisis having caused a distortion of the structure of public expenditure, the data displayed relates to the year 2019 in order to remain informative on a more usual situation of public finances, justifies the minister.
