Return to Monkey Island: Legendary Series is getting a sequel and Ron Gilbert is on board

Because with a 57-second trailer, “Return to Monkey Island” was announced as a completely surprising new part of the Monkey Island series.

The content can be summarized as follows: Undead workers stack boxes on a pier labeled with the studios involved, a violin-playing pirate skeleton accompanies the scene with the well-known theme of the villain LeChuck.

Then fan-favorite Murray – a talking skull – interrupts the scene by saying “Ron Gilbert told me, he’d never make another Monkey Island unless…” before being rudely interrupted. Translated this means: “Rob Gilbert told me he would never develop another Monkey Island unless…”

So not much is known about the actual game. However, the end credits of the video show two particularly important names: Ron Gilbert and Dave Grossman, the main developers of the first two Monkey Island games.

The development of the game takes over Terrible Toybox – Gilbert’s own studio, which was able to convince with Thimbleweed Park in the adventure genre. LucasArts successor Lucasfilms Games is involved as a licensor, while Devolver Digital is responsible for publishing.

After The Curse of, Escape From and Tales of Monkey Island, is this simply a sixth part? No, as the publisher announced on Twitter. With Return to Monkey Island, history is rewritten, because the game is intended to pick up and continue directly after the second part LeChuck’s Revenge from 1991.

This makes perfect sense since both Gilbert and Grossman were no longer involved in subsequent games – which is also referenced in the trailer. The second part ended very openly and the third part hardly dealt with the loose ends of the predecessor.

So fans of the original games and the remaster versions could finally get answers to many open questions. It is not yet known when exactly Return to Monkey Island will be released and for which platforms. However, when a release date is set, you can find it in our game release list.
