Reunion: breakdown of fixed and mobile telephony on the whole island

The prefecture indicated that internet access could also be disrupted depending on the area.

A breakdown seriously disrupted the fixed and mobile telephone network on Tuesday evening throughout Reunion Island, as well as internet access in certain areas, the prefecture announced. This breakdown was caused by a power cut that occurred in the afternoon in the district of the capital Saint-Denis where the technical center which manages the networks of the operator Orange is located, explained the prefecture in a press release.

The backup systems then “defaultedaround 10:00 p.m. local (8 p.m. in France), affecting the network of the whole island, she added. The emergency numbers remained in service but the prefect set up a series of alternative numbers to contact the police, gendarmerie and fire departments.

The supply of the fixed and mobile telephony network was restored at midnight local time (10:00 p.m. in France), which should allow “a gradual resumption of landline and internet services in the next few hours throughout the island“, according to the prefecture. The Orange mobile network was to remain affected until Wednesday morning.
