Reunion hospital barricades itself to face a cyberattack

A new French hospital victim of a computer intrusion? The university hospital center (CHU) of Reunion has just deplored a “cyberattack” in a press release, this Wednesday, February 8, without detailing the modalities. “This was detected early and is the subject of appropriate measures to protect the continuity of care, our data and our IT tools”, specifies the health establishment.

Internet and remote access cut off

The hospital center has thus taken two main emergency measures to strengthen its IT security. Internet access has been cut “until further notice”, while remote access to applications for teleworking is suspended. “Analyses are still underway to assess the impacts and identify additional corrective measures to be implemented,” adds the establishment.

However, a sign that the crisis seems under control, “the messaging is still accessible, as are all the applications from the workstations”, finally reports the CHU, which alerted “the regional and national authorities”.

Hit by ransomware at the end of August, the Corbeil-Essonnes hospital had, for example, had to suspend access to messaging for several weeks.

11 ransomware attacks in 2022

The reinforcement of security at the Reunion hospital is more reminiscent of the precautionary measures put in place by the private group Ramsay Santé at the end of January. The company had closed its external access, suspecting an intrusion attempt after the discovery of anomalies on “certain computer servers”. The internal investigation, however, did not observe any data theft or cases of the incident spreading.

The year 2022 ended, according to Anssi, with 11 ransomware attacks on public health establishments. “If the number of ransomware attacks is down in 2022, their consequences remain very significant, more particularly in critical sectors such as health”, noted the cyberfirefighter of the State in his overview of the threat.
