Reunion Island disrupted by a fixed and mobile telephone failure

Dhe dysfunctions that disturb the daily life of the inhabitants. A breakdown seriously disrupted the fixed and mobile telephone network throughout Reunion Island, as well as Internet access in certain areas, the prefecture announced on Tuesday, May 17. This failure was caused by a power outage that occurred in the afternoon in the district of the capital Saint-Denis where the technical center which manages the networks of the operator Orange is located.

The emergency systems then “failed” around 10 p.m. local time (8 p.m. French time), affecting the network for the entire island. The emergency numbers remained in service but the prefect set up a series of alternative numbers to contact the police, gendarmerie and fire departments.

Orange affected until Wednesday

The supply of the fixed and mobile telephone network was restored at midnight, which should allow “a gradual resumption of fixed and Internet services in the next few hours on the whole of the island”, according to the prefecture. The Orange mobile network was to remain affected until Wednesday morning.
