Revalued social aid, taxes … Everything that changes on April 1

Spring and the month of April are here. With them, measures are announced which will limit the impact of inflation on our currency. Landlords can also evict tenants who are in arrears again with the end of the winter break.

End of the winter break, revaluation of unemployment benefits and social benefits… There are many changes for French women and men on April 1, 2023.

After five months of suspension during the traditional winter break, the evictions of tenants who have rent arrears can resume.
It also becomes possible again to cut off electricity and gas to households in the event of non-payment, in certain cases. Maius before that, the suppliers must first carry out a power reduction for at least 60 days before proceeding with the cut for households who benefit from the energy check and the housing solidarity fund (FSL).

The MaPrimeRénov state system, intended for energy renovation, will no longer subsidize certain “monogesture” projects – development of attics, insulation of roof terraces, insulation of walls from the outside or inside – intended for households with resources superior.
The state also puts end to the bonus of 1,000 euros paid so far for the replacement of an oil or gas boiler with renewable energy equipment. The bonus had already been extended for another 3 months.

Revalued social benefits

Social benefits, in particular the RSA and the APL, the activity bonus and family allowances, will increase by 1.6% on April 1. They had already increased by 4% last July.

This rate of 1.6% was established from the average of the monthly inflation rates for one year, i.e. +5.6% compared to April 2022. But the real increase was reduced to +1.6 % because the government took into account the exceptional increase of 4% which had been granted “in advance” in July 2022.
A strongly criticized decision by the associations fighting against precariousness who consider this increase to be very insufficient or even “indecent”.

Unemployment insurance benefits will be increased by 1.9% on April 1, an exceptional boost due to inflation. The decision was taken by Unédic’s board of directors. This is a “first”, because until then, only one revaluation took place per year, on July 1.

Another good news for purchasing power, the energy check be there soon. With a value between 48 and 277 euros, it will be sent from April 21, 2023.

The usury rate, which sets the upper limit for new loans, will be raised on April 1 from 4% to 4.24% for fixed-rate mortgages with a duration of 20 years and more.
This ceiling rate set by the Banque de France includes all the costs of a home loan: credit rate charged by the bank, borrower insurance, possible commission from brokers… It will therefore be a little more expensive to borrow , a trend that is expected to continue for some time to come.
