Revenues generated by video games at Apple would exceed those of the leaders in the sector

The Californian manufacturer is now one of the three biggest players in the sector thanks to its App Store and its mobile games.

Apple can say thank you to the video game which today provides it with part of its annual growth.

The manufacturer is ahead of historical video game players

According to NewZoo analysts, the iPhone and iPad maker generated $15.3 billion in revenue in 2021 alone thanks to video games. This is an increase of 17.7% compared to 2020.

Apple is simply the third player in the video game sector. In front of him, we find in first place Tencent, the Chinese giant which publishes League of Legends and PUBG-Mobile with $32.2 billion in 2021 and a 9.9% increase over the previous year.

The second place in this ranking is occupied by Sony, with 18.2 billion dollars generated in 2021 and a decline of 2.3%. Microsoft is fourth, with $12.9 billion generated. Nintendo is far behind, with $8.1 billion in sales.

We must not forget Google which, with its Google Play Store, manages to generate 11 billion dollars. The increase in revenue for its part is 20.8%, the largest observed in 2021 among all video game players.

The App Store remains Apple’s cash cow

While Sony and Microsoft are waging a merciless war with billions to buy development studios and powerful licenses, Apple is still taking full advantage of its commission-based business model. The apple brand recovers between 15 and 30% on each purchase or subscription taken out via its devices. This amount is considered exorbitant by many publishers such as Epic Games, which has sued the manufacturer on this subject.

Whatever one thinks of this business model, it remains flourishing, while the three major console manufacturers are seeing their growth slowed down. Blame it on supply problems that have severely limited stocks of their latest machines for many months.

Apple seems to be investing a little more in gaming and launched Apple Arcade, its subscription gaming service, almost three years ago. Third-party games, however, remain the primary source of revenue for the App Store and are a major contributor to the continued growth of Apple’s Services category. This activity, which also includes iCloud, Apple Music and Apple TV+, alone accounts for 20% of the company’s total turnover.
