REVIEW of Obi-Wan Kenobi: Ewan McGregor at the service of fans

Since he bought the franchise Star Wars, disney connects the films, but especially the series broadcast directly on its platform of Disney+ SVoD. There is good and less good, as much to say that the fans dreaded this series a little Obi-Wan Kenobireturning to the course of the jedi knight between episodes III and IV. Do these six episodes manage to honor one of the most emblematic characters of the saga? Well, here’s our take on the series Obi-Wan Kenobi of Disney+, who will be content to mention scenes and characters from the first episode without spoiler the following of course.

Obi-Wan Kenobi is thought for the fans, and the latter are satisfied.

The first episode begins with a reminder of the facts. After his fight on Mustafar against his former apprentice Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi make sure to keep safe Luke and Leiathe first is entrusted to his uncle and aunt on Tatooine and the second is adopted by Lease and Breha Organa. 10 years later, Obi Wan stay close to Lukewatching him from afar having become Well, a simple worker hiding his powers. Oh yes, the Sith are looking for him, especially the Grand Inquisitor and Brothers and sisters at his command. But as they close in on his trail, Well is called by Organa Lease to find his daughter, kidnapped by strangers. A connection between the two problems? Of course, and this is only the beginning of the adventures ofObi Wanwho therefore did not spend half his life on Tatooine watching Luke.

Without going into the details that would spoil, Obi-Wan Kenobi is a series designed for fans, delighted to see Ewan McGregor back on screen. The Scot perfectly portrays this character concerned about the future of Luke and Leiawhile still being marked by the disappearance ofAnakin Skywalker. A Jedi diminished, resigned, who will have to face his ghosts of the past while surpassing himself to save the young Leiaand who alone carries the series thanks to his charisma. A Obi Wan at the service of the fans, but fortunately supported by other equally interesting characterswhose Revathe Third Sister enigmatic stalker Well for mysterious reasons, camped by a Moses Ingram who knows how to be terrifying and touching depending on the scene, making us completely forget the Grand Inquisitor (Rupert Friend), here very withdrawn, to the chagrin of fans of Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Special mention also to the young Vivien Lyra Blair, playing a young princess Leia lost in the middle of these adults whose motivations she does not immediately understand, but already knows how to be teasing, strong and independent, Carrie Fisher would have been proud.

REVIEW Obi Wan Kenobi (1)Despite its endearing characters, it must be recognized thatObi-Wan Kenobi suffers from several problems, especially on the writing side. the fan service is far too present, like one of the last sentences uttered by Ewan McGregor at the end of the series, a mythical wink, but totally out of context. In general, we are dealing with lengths, recalling that the project was originally supposed to be a simple film, but also with ease of writing and a recurring problem for a prequel: it is very difficult to create tension with characters who we know will not lose their lives in a fight, because present in the rest of the saga. From the start, the issue of saving Leia is therefore non-existent and the often mollassonne staging does not help to plunge into moments of action which should have been Dantesque. There remain a few (rare) well-polished shots and a light used intelligently in the last episodes, but it is impossible to forget the calamitous chase scene of the first episode, almost as ridiculous as that of the series The Boba Fett Book (with scooters). And unfortunately, despite the cover of John Williams’ themes, the soundtrack never manages to give chills during fightsonly the dialogue scenes are really touching, again with a Obi Wan scarred by his past. The series happening before Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hopehard not to have Rogue One: A Star Wars Story in mind, a feature film perfectly managed from start to finish, with a much more careful staging, where Obi-Wan Kenobi leaves the spectators on their hunger in terms of realization.

But there, impossible to spit too much on this series, Obi-Wan Kenobi is thought for the fans, and the latter are satisfied. These six episodes will not mark the history of the franchise, but it is clear that disney we had got used to much worse in terms of series, let’s not sulk our pleasure, the episodes devour one another and the viewer ends the sixth chapter with a positive feeling, delighted to have found the characters he loves so much. As expected, Obi-Wan Kenobi doesn’t revolutionize the franchise, doesn’t add much new, could have been done better, but if you like Star Wars, Ben Kenobi and the fan servicego for it.
