Emails, names and addresses of customers recovered via a targeted attack
Revolut announced that it suffered a computer attack on Sunday, September 11. The company explains that this incident ” extremely targeted » allowed an unauthorized third party to access a certain amount of personal data of online banking customers.
In detail, the hackers were able to access the email addresses, names and postal addresses, telephone numbers as well as bank account information and limited data on the payment cards of the affected users.
According to the bank, only 0.16% of its customers are affected, or around 50,000 people out of Revolut’s 20 million users worldwide. The attack was quickly identified by company security teams and isolated hours later.
Revolut assures that bank accounts were not affected during the incident
Revolut took the floor to explain the situation and nevertheless wants to be reassuring about the consequences of this intrusion. The company indicates that credit card numbers, personal codes or account access passwords were not compromised during the attack. The hackers were also unable to access bank accounts and make use of customer funds.
” Our customers’ money is safe – as it always has been. All customers can continue to use their cards and accounts as normal “, insists a spokesperson for Revolut interviewed by the site Bleeping Computer.
The customers affected by this data theft have already been contacted by email by Revolut. If you did not receive this email, your account has not been compromised.
Revolut nevertheless prefers to play the card of caution and reminds all its customers that crooks can impersonate it in order to recover passwords or the number of their bank card. It is therefore important never to communicate personal information by email or telephone and to consult Revolut customer service in case of doubt.
