Compared to a diesel excavator, the Volvo EC230 electric excavator is not only much quieter. There are also lower maintenance costs. Market launch is 2024.
- Starting next year, Volvo will be selling an emission-free electric excavator called the EC230.
- Before that, the manufacturer will demonstrate the performance of the 23-ton construction machine at various exhibitions.
- The tasks of the EC230 should cover the same range as conventional diesel excavators.
Electric excavators are not a world first – various manufacturers are working on them, but there are mainly electrified small excavators on the market, not really heavy equipment. The 23-ton medium-duty electric excavator EC230 could therefore herald the beginning of a small revolution in the construction industry. Similar to how electric fire engines are being used more and more frequently.
Because together with partner WM, Volvo promises potential buyers of the construction machine many advantages. On the one hand, as with electric cars, there are significantly lower maintenance and care costs. Quite apart from the locally emission-free and, above all, significantly quieter operation of the construction machine.

The model should be used for general excavation work, on construction sites, but also in the waste and recycling industry. Volvo states that the performance is exactly comparable to that of conventional construction machinery. Attachments and accessories are also compatible with the new electric excavator.
The EC230 is already being tested by various companies. These are intended to provide the manufacturer with feedback before the official market launch, which has so far been largely positive, according to Volvo.
