Actually everything was clear. At the beginning of August 2022, REWE proudly announced how the company intends to protect the environment by phasing out printed flyers from a certain date. Nothing will come of it – at least not necessarily. This means that many customers are no longer required to use an app.
REWE doesn’t do without flyers
Advertising brochures and leaflets are printed by almost all supermarkets and shops and distributed in the region to attract customers. However, REWE announced at the beginning of August that this would end in July 2023. From then on, no more flyers should actually be printed and distributed in order to save so many resources and energy. According to the “Lebensmittel Zeitung”, what was actually approved by all authorities was overturned. In future, in the cooperatively organized trading group, the individual merchants will be able to decide whether they want to print advertising or not. There will be no ban from the very top.
According to this, there was a great deal of resistance among the merchant colleagues at REWE, as there was a fear that customers would no longer come to the stores if there were no longer any printed flyers. The situation is currently unclear. Basically, REWE customers can no longer know for sure whether they will still receive advertising from the supermarket from July 2023 or not. So there is no longer a clear line by which one could recognize what applies where now, since everything can be decided individually. In the end, everyone will simply notice from July 2023 whether advertising is still arriving – or not.

REWE is trying to make the app more attractive
Alternatively, REWE wanted to place more digital advertising and also focus more on the app, where you can see all the offers accordingly. This is already possible. In addition, as with many other retailers, there are additional discounts and promotions that are usually not listed in the brochure. Especially now that everyone has to save money, such apps are very worthwhile.
