Haller makes Dortmund’s last-minute win possible

They can still win away: Borussia Dortmund are behind in Mainz after only two minutes, the equalizer follows a little later, but is a coincidence. It then lasted until injury time before BVB made the victory clear.
FC Bayern’s through ball used, the away curse banished: Borussia Dortmund shot itself back into the ranks of the hunters in the title race. Coach Edin Terzic’s team made use of the hard-fought 2-1 (1-1) win at FSV Mainz 05 from Munich’s blunder against Cologne (1-1) and at the end of the first half of the season moved up to five points behind the leaders in football -Bundesliga approaching.
Such victories are “the most beautiful,” said Julian Brandt on Sky: “We are currently noticing that we have to work out the victories up to the 90th minute and afterwards. It’s hard work, I think it’s outstanding that we put in the effort reward.”
Without the yellow card suspended leader Jude Bellingham, Dortmund lacked the power for a long time. Julian Ryerson (4th) with his first goal and Joker Giovanni Reyna (90th + 3) with the late winner on Sebastien Haller’s assist put BVB back in wait after Jae-Sung Lee (2nd) had scored early for Mainz . For Borussia it was only the second away win in the past seven games.
As against Augsburg, Sebastien Haller came on in the second half and provided the template for Reyna’s winning goal.

Compared to the wild exchange of blows against FC Augsburg (4: 3), Terzic made two changes. Niklas Süle took over as captain for Mats Hummels in the last extremely uncertain defense, Emre Can replaced Bellingham. While Haller was back on the bench after his emotional debut, the game came too early for Marco Reus, who was recently ill. In addition, the game started with an early shock for BVB, because Lee gave Mainz the lead with the first shot. As careless as Karim Adeyemi and Ryerson had defended at the corner, Dortmund’s reaction was just as strong. The answer? A deflected Ryerson long-range shot to equalize.
After a shaky start, the black and yellow quickly stabilized. The changeover game of Mainz, in which regular goalkeeper Robin Zentner (back problems) was missing again and defensive newcomer Andreas Hache-Olsen made his debut, Dortmund nipped in the bud and created good chances through Youssoufa Moukoko (8th), Süle (9th) and Adeyemi ( 14.) out. However, Borussia didn’t keep up the pressure for long. Dortmund lacked ideas in a tough game, and the defense wobbled again occasionally. Unlike the last time, however, this was not punished against hosts who were too harmless.
Süle and Co. allowed significantly more after the break. BVB acted too passively and were lucky with the shots by Karim Onisiwo (57th) and Marcus Ingvartsen (60th). Terzic reacted: Haller was joined by Giovanni Reyna and Jamie Bynoe-Gittens, who shot too imprecisely when he had the best chance (68th). BVB only pushed harder again in the final phase and rewarded themselves late. Haller headed a corner to Reyna, who had already scored against Augsburg to win.
