Rhône Drought: the use of water is now restricted

A week after being placed on drought alert, the water situation is worsening in the surface waters of the department. The recent rains did not restore the normal water resource situation for the season.

Noting “a continuous and rapid decline in the flow of rivers”, the prefect Pascal Mailhos placed this Wednesday a major part of the department in a situation of heightened alert. The East Lyonnais is on alert, the Gier watershed remains vigilant.

Restrictions now apply for professionals and individuals.

Watering restrictions and swimming pool filling prohibited

In eastern Lyon, professionals, including farmers, must reduce surface water withdrawals by 25%. And 50% in the rest of the department.

For individuals, lawn watering is prohibited. That of the domestic vegetable gardens too, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. In the Est Lyonnais, these restrictions apply between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. The filling of swimming pools is prohibited, except in the case of first impoundment. In a heightened alert zone, it is no longer possible to complete the level either.

In addition, the washing of vehicles is restricted to professional stations only. For the area placed on heightened alert, only washing by high pressure lance remains authorized.

The washing of facades and roofs, waterproofed surfaces, as well as the movement of animals in the bed of waterways are also prohibited.

An interactive map published by the prefecture provides information on all the restrictions by municipality, depending on use.

The situation is reassessed every 7 days, without improvement additional restrictive measures could be taken. Note that groundwater (groundwater) has been on the alert since April 29.
