Rio Tinto: launches a can with a low carbon footprint

(CercleFinance.com) – Rio Tinto today announced, in partnership with Corona Canada, the launch of Canada’s first low carbon footprint branded beverage can, manufactured by Ball Corporation.

The cans, now available in a pilot trial in Ontario, are made of Rio Tinto aluminum and feature ELYSIS technology. During this limited launch, 1.2million cans were fitted with a QR code to encourage consumers to learn more about their low carbon footprint. This pilot test is a first step towards bringing a fully traceable beverage can to market.

Currently, approximately 70% of the aluminum used in beverage cans produced in North America is recycled aluminum. By combining this recycled metal with Rio Tinto’s low-carbon aluminum – made from renewable hydroelectricity – and metal produced using ELYSIS electrolysis technology with no direct greenhouse gas emissions, carbon emissions over 30%.
