Rio Tinto: wants a change of course in Australia

(CercleFinance.com) – Rio Tinto has called for the resignation of the chairman of the board of directors of Energy Resources of Australia (ERA), Peter Mansell, in order to introduce new perspectives to deal with the cost and schedule overruns of the Ranger project (Northern Australia).

Rio Tinto has sought to work constructively with ERA’s Independent Board Committee (IBC) to find a financing solution to meet its rehabilitation obligations.

Despite this commitment, Rio Tinto remains concerned that opposition to any new uranium mining on the lands of the Mirarr people, traditional owners, has not been adequately recognized in the funding proposals put forward by the IBC.

‘Our commitment is to rehabilitate the Ranger Project area in accordance with the wishes of the Mirarr people. This requires a renewal of the board of directors of ERA’, comments Kellie Parker, chief executive of Rio Tinto in Australia.

Rio Tinto reiterates its commitment to successfully rehabilitate the Ranger Project area to standards that will establish an environment similar to that of the adjacent Kakadu National Park.
