In an interview given by Riot August, the lead designer for League of Legends champions, at MGG Spainwe learn a lot about behind the scenes of game champion development. Even if the champions all come with their own unique and very interesting mechanicsit is not always very easy to find the ideas leading to the creation of these characters. However, in this interview, Riot August confides two of the leads the studio is currently investigating for new champions.
First of all, Riot August seems strongly attached to the urge to bring a new character in vampire form in LoL. Even if Vladimir, the Crimson Bloodletterwields blood, he is not strictly speaking one but rather a blood magician. Riot August seeks to constitute a real vampire. “For now I was not given this chance but I hope it will come. A champion who sucks the blood of his enemies and who can also transform into a bat, That would be super cool!”
The champions’ lead designer also confides that one of his future projects will be turned on a champion with a gigantic sword. He takes special care of the champions’ weapons, to make them unique and has already been inspired by things that already exist, confident even having already studied the forge of Dark Souls.
I don’t know yet what will be the continuation of my program after Zeri and I will take some time to rest. But I would like to make a champion with a very big sword. Aatrox is kind of in that spirit, but I would like to make a character with a really gigantic sword.
As Riot August says, Aatrox already wields a really big sword, however, this new champion could have an even bigger blade. We can therefore imagine a set of skills composed around this weapon, which should be very aggressive.
This therefore reserves a good schedule for the publication of champions for this year, with champions always more focused on originality with their unique mechanics. As Riot August said, however, he was planning to take a little break, so it will take probably wait a bit for the lead designer to recover after the many champions having arrived recently.
