Rishi Sunak, first Truss succession candidate to collect 100 endorsements

Oct 22 (Reuters) – Britain’s former finance minister Rishi Sunak is believed to be the first Conservative Party presidential candidate to have amassed the 100 endorsements needed to stand, according to media reports.

The contenders for the post of Prime Minister of the United Kingdom are working to bring together by Monday the hundred sponsorships and more Conservative MPs necessary for their candidacy. The internal ballot will be closed on October 28 and the name of the new head of government will be announced the same day.

Earlier today, former UK Defense Secretary Penny Mordaunt announced her candidacy to succeed Liz Truss, becoming the first Conservative MP to declare herself.

Rishi Sunak is a favorite among the bookmakers, followed by ex-Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Penny Mordaunt, however he remains deeply unpopular with some Tories for having worked to rebel against Boris Johnson within the party. (Report Juby Babu; French version Camille Raynaud)
