Risks of blackout: schools, banks, telephones… What to expect?

Whether it is to do your shopping or to travel by car or train, our whole daily life will be turned upside down, details “Le Figaro”.

Lis France going back to the 19th century this winter? The question might seem absurd if the risk of power cuts during the winter season were not so great. And for good reason, in order to save its electricity system over time, the country may have to implement temporary “load shedding”. For the time being, the government is showing pedagogy by calling on the French to be more energy sober, with its new mantra: “I lower, I turn off, I shift”. However, these temporary power cuts will not be without consequences for our lives, as compiled Le Figaro, Friday, December 2.

What about the businesses that would be affected? Everything will depend on where you live and the economic fabric that surrounds you. According to the Federation of Commerce and Distribution, quoted by our colleagues, small businesses and stores “may decide whether or not to close depending on the announcement” of a load shedding. On the other hand, the largest structures “have generators” and could go through the blackouts. Equipment still rare in hypermarkets. Ditto for restaurants, for the greediest.

Another concern: that of telephone communications… and indirectly that of Internet access. In an increasingly connected world, there is – to date – no backup battery on the relay antennas scattered in France. In the event of cuts, the inhabitants of areas without electricity will no longer be able to make any calls, including to emergency numbers. The only number spared: 112, the European emergency number. “However, in some places less well equipped with relay antennas, it may remain inaccessible. In cases where the 112 could not work, other devices will be put in place by the prefects”, indicates the government, quoted by the daily.

Schools affected, morning or afternoon

On the transport side, the philosophy will be that of cancellations. Indeed, instead of risking blocking an entire train of TGV in the middle of a field, the SNCF will favor cancellations of trains upstream. Power cuts must be announced the day before. Little impact, we assure the RATP, the network being supplied “in a closed circuit”. On the other hand, be careful if you are driving and crossing an area where the electricity is cut off. Indeed, red lights and other streetlights will not be spared by the organized cuts.

Until the end of December, however, there should be no blackout. On the other hand, the Ministry of Education is preparing for it for the days following the start of the school year in January. As a reminder, three cut-off slots are planned: from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. During the first two, if a school is affected by a cut, it would not start classes until the afternoon. Note in passing that the canteen will be provided. According to our colleagues from Parisian, on Friday, there cannot be two power cuts on the same day. On the other hand, the situation will be complicated from an organizational point of view. Indeed, the offloaded areas will only be known the day before at 3 p.m. and communications to the population will only take place at 7 p.m. by the prefecture.

Finally, if you live in a building, it is better to avoid using the elevator if there is one. And this, even before the start of the cut, as a precaution. And on a daily basis, you will have to temporarily forget to go to the ticket machines, which will not work. Just like, and this is more annoying, the door of his building, if the opening of this one is conditioned to the entry of a digicode.
