Risky Prime Day deal on Amazon: If you use it, you could face a fine of up to 5,000 euros

BARGAIN

Amazon is bringing back the top seller on Prime Day, which can cost you dearly. You should think carefully about its use.

Just in time for Prime Day, there are thousands of cheaper offers on Amazon. Among the most popular products is the “OOONO CO-Driver NO1” (the predecessor of the recently introduced CO-Driver NO2), a speed camera detector with a deliberate choice of name, which lies in a legally gray area. The device is currently offered at a special price and is one of the top sellers in the “car alarm systems” category.

OOONO can warn you about speed traps in your car in real time. To achieve this, the device relies on its own community and the well-known platform Blitzer.de. Every owner can also report speed cameras themselves. The gadget also offers notifications for dangers such as broken down vehicles or police and fire brigade operations.

This is how OOONO works

OOONO connects to your cell phone via Bluetooth. The gadget emits beeps and various flashing signals when there is danger. The device automatically activates the associated app on a connected cell phone, which runs in the background. There is no subscription or other additional costs.

Legally prohibited

For a long time, flash warning devices were in the gray area because their use was not illegal, at least for passengers. That changed with the ruling of the OG Karlsruhe. It is now forbidden for drivers and passengers to carry or operate speed camera detectors. Anyone caught doing this will face severe penalties.

Anyone caught with a speed camera or radar detector in Germany will face a fine of 75 euros and one point in Flensburg. Officials are also allowed to seize devices if necessary.

However, penalties can be much more expensive abroad. There are different regulations from country to country, sometimes there is a strict ban on carrying things, sometimes there is just a ban on use. The harshest punishment is in Luxembourg: According to the ADAC, anyone who actively uses a speed camera detector like the one from OOONO for speed camera warnings risks a fine of up to 5,000 euros or even a prison sentence of eight days to a year.

However, you can use OOONO legally if you deactivate the speed warnings within the app. The device then still reports if there are dangers such as traffic jams or accidents on your route.
