RKI list: Austria and Italy almost entirely classified as risk areas

The federal government has declared Austria, except for two small exclaves and almost all of Italy, to be corona risk areas from this Sunday (November 1st) due to the dramatic increase in infection numbers.

With Croatia, Slovenia, Hungary, Bulgaria and Cyprus, five EU countries are also completely placed on the risk list, as the Robert Koch Institute announced on its website on Friday. For the first time, areas in Greece and Latvia were also classified as risk areas. Further regions are added in Denmark, Portugal, Sweden and Lithuania. The small states of Monaco, San Marino and the Vatican are now risk areas.

With the exception of two small municipalities, Austria is classified as a risk area

In Austria, Carinthia was the only federal state that was excluded. Now there are only two left Exceptions for the Kleinwalsertal and the community of Jungholz with a total of over 5000 inhabitants. Both exclaves can only be reached by road from Germany. In Italy, Calabria in the south of the country is now the only region that is not a risk area from a German perspective.

Classification as a risk area: travelers must present in quarantine or negative test

The classification as a risk area and the associated travel warnings from the Federal Foreign Office do not mean a travel ban, but should have the greatest possible deterrent effect on tourists.

The good thing for vacationers: You can cancel trips that have already been booked if your destination is declared a risk area.

The bad: Returnees from the risk areas currently have to be quarantined for 14 days, but can be freed from it prematurely with a negative test.

The classification as a risk area occurs when a country or region exceeds the limit of 50 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants in the past seven days. A large part of Germany is also already a risk area according to these criteria.
