Road safety: mortality drops by 5% in September


In September, 262 people died on metropolitan roads, compared to 275 in September 2021. Compared to 2019, the drop is even 15%.

Lhe number of people who died in September on the roads of mainland France fell by 5% compared to the same month of 2021, Road Safety said on Monday, October 17. In one month, 262 people died in mainland France, compared to 276 in September 2021, according to a press release from the National Interministerial Observatory for Road Safety (ONISR). Compared to 2019, before the Covid epidemic, the drop is even more significant and reaches 15%.

Road Safety records a sharp drop in the number of motorists who died on mainland roads compared to 2019 (29 fewer victims) as well as cyclists (6 fewer), but notes an increase in mortality among under-18s : 20 killed in September 2022, compared to 16 in September 2021 and 14 in September 2019.

The number of injury accidents recorded by the police fell to 4,666 in September 2022, compared to 5,450 in September 2021 (-14%) and 5,127 in September 2019 (-9%). In the overseas territories, 19 people were killed in a road accident in September 2022 compared to 26 in September 2021 and 17 in September 2019. The number of injury accidents recorded by the police is on the rise. It stood at 271 in September 2022, compared to 221 in September 2021 and 217 in September 2019.
