La Road safety unveiled on Wednesday 1er February its figures for the year 2022. In total, 3,260 people died on the roads of metropolitan France during the past year: a balance sheet at a stable level (+ 0.5%) compared to 2019, the last reference year before the pandemic. Note, however, a “worrying increase” in the mortality of cyclists, with 244 killed, an increase of 30% compared to 2019 (+ 57 killed).
Estimates from the National Interministerial Road Safety Observatory (ONISR), presented at a press conference at Cochin Hospital in Paris, are compared to 2019 rather than 2020 and 2021, where the figures had gone under. the symbolic bar of 3,000 deaths.
Falling mortality for motorists
“Less than 50% of road deaths are car occupants,” said the Interministerial Delegate for Road Safety, Florence Guillaume. Road mortality is down in 2022 for motorists compared to 2019 with 1,563 killed (- 59) as well as for motorized two-wheeler users with 715 deaths (- 34), according to ONISR figures.
“Unfortunately, and this goes hand in hand with the development of soft mobility, there is a worrying increase in the mortality of cyclists and users of motorized personal transport devices (EDPm)”, such as scooters, lamented Ms. Guillaume.
For the second year in a row, the number of cyclists killed exceeded the 200 death threshold: 244 were killed in 2022, up 30% compared to 2019, i.e. 57 more deaths. Regarding EDPm, 34 scooter riders lost their lives compared to 10 in 2019, with 600 seriously injured, 400 more than three years earlier. In the overseas territories, 281 people died on the roads, an increase of 11% compared to 2019 (+ 27 killed).
