Robert Downey Jr. won Best Supporting Actor at this year’s Academy Awards. A memorable moment, which, however, was not the highlight of the evening for the actor, as he now reveals.

After being nominated for “Chaplin” in 1992 and “Tropic Thunder” in 2009, Robert Downey Jr., 58, finally won the much-coveted golden boy at this year’s Oscars. With his portrayal of Lewis Strauss in “Oppenheimer,” he was considered the favorite in the “Best Supporting Actor” category in the run-up to the Academy Awards and ultimately prevailed. On this special evening, the Hollywood star was accompanied and supported by his wife Susan Downey, 50. For the couple, the Oscars were like their wedding night, the 58-year-old now reveals.

Robert Downey Jr. moves his partner to tears

When Robert Downey Jr. hears his name, he gives his lover a kiss and rushes onto the stage. He accepts the Oscar and poses like a rock star. With a mischievous grin, he throws his arms in the air and makes a peace sign with both hands. In his usual casual and charismatic manner, the actor makes the most of the moment. In his acceptance speech, it doesn’t take long before he addresses Susan. “I want to thank my vet – I mean my wife – Susan Downey over there. She found me, a fierce rescue animal, and loved me back to life. That’s why I’m here. Thank you,” he says and moves his partner, to whom he has been married since 2005, to tears.

After the ceremony, the Oscar winner revealed in an interview with “People” that the Academy Awards evening felt “like our wedding night.” Because it was a memorable evening, but in which many things “happened in many ways for other people”. What he enjoyed most was a very intimate moment with his wife that was not visible to the TV audience.

“The best part of the night – sorry, in the world – was that there was a commercial break and we just leaned our heads together like two dinosaurs letting each other know we were a couple. And it was great.”
