Gerd Müller’s goal record had existed for almost 50 years, now it has been set by Robert Lewandowski. His teammates congratulate him.

Europe’s footballer of the year, world footballer and now that. With this goal he is on par with Gerd Müller, one of the greatest of all time.” Lewandowski’s team-mate and Gerd’s namesake Thomas Müller (31) writes in his Instagram story: “The best strikers in Bundesliga history: Gerd Müller and Robert Lewandowski.”

Sport1 quotes the outgoing national coach Joachim Löw (61) with the words: “It is impressive to score such a number of goals. Nowadays it is even more difficult than it was before.”

Even Lewandowski himself got on Instagram already commented on his historic achievement. To a picture of himself shortly after goal number 40, on which he wears a t-shirt with the inscription “4ever Gerd”, he writes: “I scored a goal that previously seemed impossible to even imagine.” He proudly follows “in the footsteps of the legendary Gerd Müller.” At the same time, of course, he also knows who to thank: “Personal records in football are only possible through your team-mates and I would like to thank them and all the employees at FC Bayern.”
