AI models are all the rage, and it’s Roblox’s turn to announce the launch of Help code And Material Generator : two AI responsible for part of the low technical work necessary for the creation of a video game.

Last month, Roblox Corporation, publisher of the eponymous game, unveiled its vision for AI-assisted content creation. This week, the group is getting hands-on by releasing Code Assist and Material Generator, in beta. The idea behind these two AI? Allowing anyone to create code and 3D models by entering only text queries… just like ChatGPT or Midjourney.

Leave the dirty work to the AI … and focus on the imagination

The objective has also been clearly explained, Roblox Corp. wishing’ allow all users on Roblox to be creators without having to bother with the sometimes tedious steps inherent in the technical design of a work or video game content.

As specified Engadget, neither of the two tools launched, however, allows (at least for the moment) to achieve a playable Roblox experience by being satisfied only with simple textual requests. The idea is rather to roughen the work in order to help the creators to concentrate on their imagination and less on the daunting technical aspect of their projects.

This is what Stef Corazza, boss of Roblox Studio, explained during the GDC. The interested party indicated in particular that these two tools will allow ” to help automate basic coding tasks so you can focus on your creative work.”

Soon playable and yet AI-created experiences?

In the immediate future, Code Assist and Material Generator can therefore generate useful code snippets to move forward faster, but also textures that can be applied to 3D models, all through brief instructions provided by the user. More concretely, the two tools of Roblox already make it possible to produce realistic textures for ” the bright red rock of a canyon or stained glass, among other things, but also to result in several lines of functional code allowing certain objects to change color or even self-destruct after a player has interacted with them.

However, these two AIs are still the cause of a few failures, which does not yet make them 100% reliable. In addition, it may also be interesting to take a look at GPT-3, which also allows code generation using textual queries.

Finally, note that according to Stef Corazza, it should be possible within a few years to create fully playable 3D scenes and interactive experiences, thanks to Roblox AI.
