Roborock: This is how you restore the lost WiFi connection

TECHNOLOGY

If the smart vacuum cleaners in the Roborock series lose the connection to the WLAN, good advice is expensive. This is how you reconnect to the home network.

Truly loyal companions: Actually, Xiaomi Roborock devices hardly cause any problems. However, sometimes you have to show them the way back to the WLAN. (Source: © Netzwelt / Image: Richard W. Schaber)

True to their name, the Roborock vacuum robots are a robotic rock as a rock. Nimble and manoeuvrable, they keep the floor clean and thus the everyday dirt that accumulates in living spaces in check.

Once set up and connected to the home WLAN via the smartphone app, the smart everyday helpers actually operate without any problems, rarely require maintenance, only have to be emptied regularly and occasionally cleaned of dirt.

But Roborock enthusiasts experience a true odyssey when the smart vacuum cleaner can no longer find its way into the WLAN – and therefore, apart from the spot cleaning mode that can be called up at the push of a button, can no longer work. Here, the usual troubleshooting measures are often unsuccessful.

Common problem: The Roborock suddenly no longer has WiFi

Whether by changing the network settings or simply for no apparent reason: If the Roborock can no longer get into the home network, the big guesswork begins. The search for the way back to the WLAN can often be very difficult.

But before you tear down your WLAN structure at home to reconnect everything freshly connected, it’s better to first check whether there isn’t a very banal reason for the connection error.

Before you have to do any major surgery: First make sure that your router is connected to the power supply and the WLAN is activated.

Simple reasons why the Roborock cannot connect

  • Make sure the router connected to the Roborock is powered.
  • Checks the WiFi indicator light on the router: is the wireless network on?
  • Does the Roborock dock have constant power supply?
  • Did you enter the WiFi password correctly when trying to connect via smartphone?

Factory reset Roborock? Not recommended!

If all of the above reasons have been eliminated, a short restart of the router could help – although the hope of success is not necessarily high. However, resetting the Roborock to factory settings is not the most sensible next step: after all, all your maps, runtime and maintenance information will be lost.

First Aid for the Roborock

  • Use Xiaomi’s Mi Home app from the App Store instead of the Roborock app – or vice versa
  • Remove special characters such as !, # and § from the WLAN name and password in the router menu via your browser
  • Also make sure in the router menu that the password protocol WPA2 is set.
  • If in doubt, try setting up the WLAN again with a new name and new password
  • If the previous measures are also unsuccessful, the following trick will probably help you.

The solution to the riddle: 2.4 instead of 5.0 GHz

What may sound a little complicated at first can actually be done very easily by each of you yourself: Like other smart home devices, the Roborock also prefers the 2.4 gigahertz frequency of your WLAN – and can be used with the 5.0 gigahertz level do not start much.

Now both frequencies are probably activated in your network and the connection to the correct frequency does not work. Simply switch off the 5 gigahertz Internet in the router menu and try the connection again. You don’t need to give the 2.4 gigahertz WLAN your own name or password for this.

The usual connection process via the smartphone app should then work again. Now you can also switch the 5 gigahertz WLAN back on and all other devices in the household do not have to be reconnected either.
