A former flagship of Roborock, the S7 quickly established itself as one of the best robot vacuum cleaners when it launched. But can it compete with the Dreame D9, a mid-range but more recent model?

How the pricing table works
The Roborock S7 was launched early last year at an RRP of €549, but today it’s available to pick up for less than €500 and the price is sure to continue to drop. It can therefore be tempting to buy the former flagship of Roborock, since it obviously benefits from advanced functions, like its vibrating mop. In a year, however, some technologies have had time to democratize when others have been improved, and the most recent Dreame D9 ultimately has little to envy the Roborock S7 despite its much lower price: it is found at less than €300.
A very effective suction for our two challengers
If it is certainly not entitled to a vibrating mop, the cheapest model can still be completed with a simple mop to wash the floor while vacuuming. It is therefore less effective, but given the fairly average results obtained with the Roborock vacuum cleaner, it is difficult to make it a really decisive criterion when it comes to choosing. It is also the same for the suction performance, for the opposite reason: the two models are just as excellent as the other on this point. They collected almost all the waste on hard floors and thin carpets during our tests, and exceeded 80% on thick carpets.
S7 and D9 are also very simple to maintain, but we can note that the first can be completed with an automatic emptying station sold separately. It avoids having to manually empty its dust container. Whatever the model, the operation is simple, but it is not uncommon to come out with dirty hands. Automatic emptying can therefore be more attractive, provided you are ready to offload a few hundred extra euros.

Very similar navigation systems
On the navigation side, the two models benefit from numerous sensors on their tower and their belly, to which is added a laser rangefinder to allow them to map the house and find their way around. In both cases, it is possible to save several maps by delimiting the different rooms for targeted cleaning and to define areas to avoid. Both are very methodical in squaring the surfaces to be cleaned, at the risk, however, of wasting a little time in the case of the Roborock S7. The Dreame D9, for its part, is proving to be extremely efficient: 10 minutes were enough for it to clean our Lab!
Obstacles are generally well circumvented by the two robots, up to a certain size; if they are less than 10 cm high, or about the height of the robots, they will not be able to cross the beam of the laser rangefinder and risk being knocked over, or even swallowed for cables or socks. Some models can even anticipate small obstacles thanks to cameras on the front, like the Roomba J7. This is also the case with the S7 Max V, but Roborock had not yet deployed this technology when it launched the S7, and the Dreame D9 does not benefit from it either.
The more enduring and less noisy Dreame D9
Similar on many points to the S7 therefore, the most affordable model is on the other hand the more enduring of the two, and by far: it is able to vacuum for 2 h 39 min at normal power and for 1 h 30 min in mode Turbo, while the S7 just exceeded 1 h 30 min… at normal power. The D9 is also a bit quieter: our sound level meter registered no more than 57 dB(A) during our tests with the latter, while we measured up to 64 dB(A) with the other.

How the pricing table works
At less than €300, the Dreame D9 offers by far the best value for money. In addition to having nothing to envy to the Roborock S7 in terms of performance, it moves more efficiently and is much more enduring. Its rival, however, allows you to take advantage of an interesting automatic emptying station for those who do not want to get their hands dirty and remains an interesting model for small surfaces. Especially if its price ends up dropping a little more.
