Rockstar at the heart of a pirated games scandal

Like many publishers and developers, Rockstar Games don’t like piracy. The English studio is also very active when it comes to protecting its intellectual property, regularly removing mods for his games, but nowtoday he finds himself at the heart of a scandal precisely linked to piracy.

THE Youtuber Vadim M published a long video which reviews the case of Manhunt, an ultra violent action game placing us in the shoes of a death row inmate who must participate in a snuff movie. A title which caused a scandal in 2003 when it was released on PS2, and which is little appreciated by PC players. The port released a few years later on Steam is full of bugs, making progression in the game very complicated. Fortunately, the community has created mods to overcome all that, but it’s always sad to get to that point after having legally purchased your game.

But what Vadim M reveals especially in his video, this is the reason for the presence of all these bugs in the game for all these years. If Manhunt is bugged on Steamit’s because we are playing a pirated version! Yes, developers often voluntarily put protections in-game to ruin the lives of pirates, it’s fair game, but here, Rockstar Games outright sold the pirated version of Manhunt on Steam, therefore activating these protections for legal buyers. Moreover, the version Steam of Manhunt was released a few years after the first PC version, and in cracking the latter, no bug is present, it’s the world upside down.

Internet users obviously went to dig into the game files, and discovered in the code the name of Razor 1911a famous hacker team. Going further, players found the signature of Razor 1911 in the source files of Midnight Club II (removed from sale on Steam for a while), while on the side of Max Payne 2it’s here team Myth which is present.

Rockstar Games did not communicate about this scandalthe studio is known for remaining silent in all circumstances (except when GTA VI leaked everywhere), but it is clear that PC players will now hesitate for a while before legally purchasing the English studio’s games. And above all, this once again raises the question of the conservation of video games. Here again, to get the most out of a title, you have to pirate it… You can also find Red Dead Redemption 2 has €56.99 on Gamesplanet.
