Rodolphe Belmer, the new CEO of TF1, defends his channel before the Arcom

A big leap on the occasion of an important day for the French audiovisual industry, but clearly not a leap into the unknown. It was before the Audiovisual and Digital Communication Regulatory Authority (Arcom, ex-CSA) that Rodolphe Belmer made his first public speech as the new CEO of TF1, on Wednesday February 15. The stakes were quite limited for the front page insofar as the channel is the only candidate for the first frequency. Nevertheless, the exercise remained unpublished since 1987, the year of privatization.

Alongside several members of the management of the TF1 group, the former director general of Canal + defended, for a little over ninety minutes, the renewal of the frequency from May 6, for the next ten years. . Mr. Belmer expressed his desire to “ continuity » to pursue a project “unifier” around sport, information, entertainment and fiction. No editorial big bang on the horizon, therefore, but the desire to press the main lines of force of the channel.

Recalling the ratings successes of the series HPI, soon to be adapted by the American channel ABC, the management of TF1 assured that the volume of 70 to 75 slots of the first part of the evening devoted to unpublished fiction would remain unchanged in the years to come. Ara Aprikian, director of programs for the TF1 group, also assured that the ambition was to stay around 70% of unpublished programs offered between 6 a.m. and midnight.

Take advantage of the “digitalization of uses”

However, TF1 does not forget that the final of the Football World Cup in Qatar, at the end of 2022, made it possible to establish a record, with 24.1 million viewers. The channel therefore wants to continue to invest in the rights to broadcast team sports. It will broadcast the Rugby World Cup in 2023, but also the European and World Championships in men’s and women’s handball until 2025, as well as the matches of the Blues until 2028 (including Euro 2024).

The MYTF1 streaming platform totaled one billion views in 2022

Will the front page of 2033 look like the one we know today? If linear television must remain a mainstay for live events, the disruption of uses with the explosion of consultations on catch-up and video-on-demand platforms is set to increase, replied the CEO of TF1.

The MYTF1 streaming platform totaled one billion views in 2022 and the average age of viewers is ten years younger than regulars on linear television. In its outlook for 2023, announced on Tuesday February 14, the channel makes no secret of the fact that it intends to take full advantage of the “digitalization of uses to develop knowledge of its audiences, but above all to reinforce the value of advertising inventories”.
