ROG Ally: which external batteries to make the fun last much longer?

There ROG Ally is a portable Windows console that packs a heavy punch under the hood (AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme) and allows you to run almost all old and current games in good conditions by displaying 1080p at 60 fps. Thus, playing in “silent” mode can last almost three hours, while switching to “Turbo” mode can reduce the session to less than an hour. You have understood it, so you have to adapt the game profile according to what you play so as not to over-consume unnecessarily (Pac man does not require the same power as a Cyberpunk 2077 to turn smoothly). Thanks to Armory CrateTHE launcher games of the ROG Allyit is possible to assign a personalized profile to each title that we have.

But now, sometimes, during long trips, access to a power outlet is not possible and the use of an external battery is essential to overtake. But here, the ROG Ally is a PC console and recharging it requires a heavy external battery, in every sense of the word. At a minimum, it takes a model sending 65 W (stamped “PD 65W”, in general) and a USB Type-C cable that supports charging while being long enough to put the battery next to you (given the weight, forget the pockets). Finally, you have to aim for 30,000 mAh to offer more than double the initial playing time.

Here are the two models we tested with the ROG Ally since three weeks ago :

  • SLuB Power Bank Portable charger 30,000 mAh (PD 65W) – €79.99 incl. VAT – USB Type-C charging cable included (1 m, white)
This model is aesthetically very austere, but its slightly bluish dress (it cannot be seen in the photo) gives it a less clumsy appearance than if it were completely black. With its weight of 614 g, it is heavier than the console itself. There are three fast charging outputs, including one in USB Type-C (the one to use to charge the console) and 65 W. A digital meter indicates the charge level in percentage. With its 30,000 mAh capacity, it offers 10% more capacity than our second battery choice, it is more compact and less heavy, but it costs almost twice as much.

  • imuto external battery 27000 mAh (PD 65W) – €45.81 incl. VAT (with a coupon of -15% to check on the product sheet) – USB Type-C charging cable included (40 cm, black)
This model is thinner and wider than the previous one and displays a weight on the scale of 634 g. It also has three outputs, but only the USB Type-C one provides fast charging and 65 W. A large digital meter, located on the long side, displays the battery charge level in percentage. It offers a capacity of 27,000 mAh, which puts it a step below the previous model in terms of capacity, but has the advantage of costing almost half as much.

If you want a longer charging cable, be sure to get one that is compatible with fast charging. Our choice turned to the two-meter cable INUI USB Type-C 100W PD 5A at €7.99 including VAT.
