After a wave of new consumer or professional laptops, Asus is unveiling new machines for video games with its ROG brand. The most important announcement is a new reference to the manufacturer’s catalog in its young Flow range: the ROG Flow X16.

AMD Ryzen 9 6900HS and high-end dedicated GPU

ROG’s Flow range is still young. It made us meet the excellent ROG Flow X13 in 2021 and the interesting ROG Flow Z13 at the start of 2022. In both cases, it is a question of offering a machine dedicated to gaming as mobile as possible, with use tablet and the ability to connect an external graphics card. This is what makes the DNA of the Flow range, facing the manufacturer’s Zephyrus. With the ROG Flow X16 we keep these principles and apply them to a slightly larger machine, equipped with a 16-inch screen.

The product features are very attractive on paper. Judge for yourself: AMD Ryzen 9 6900 HS processor, dedicated Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 Ti graphics chip with 8 GB of GDDR6 (125W of TGP with Dynamic Boost), up to 64 GB of DDR5 4800 MHz RAM, up to 2 TB of SSD PCIe 4 and a 90 Wh battery. Obviously, this is the best possible configuration and it will be possible to lower the bill by playing on the storage, the processor or the graphics chip.

The proposed screen should also meet all our expectations. Asus offers a choice of a QHD (2560 x 1600 pixels) mini LED display at 165 Hz with a 16:10 aspect ratio, Dolby Vision HDR certification, a promised maximum brightness of 1100 nits and 100% DCI-P3 coverage, or failing that, a more classic IPS LCD screen, with the same promises of refreshment and definition, but a brightness limited to 500 nits.

Above the screen, there is a 3DNR camera with infrared sensor to support Windows Hello face recognition.

In an ultraportable chassis

Despite these features that seem to come from a large laptop dedicated to video games, the ROG Flow X16 seems to keep a controlled envelope. We are talking about an ultraportable whose screen can be turned to transform it into a tablet. It is true that the ROG Flow X16 will try to push the upper limit of the category with a weight of just 2 kg and a thickness of 19.4 mm for a chassis of 355 x 243 mm.

Connectivity is also there with a USB 3.2 Type-C port, two USB 3.2 Type-A ports, an HDMI 2.0b port, a 3.5 mm port and a microSD card reader. Added to this is the XG Mobile interface which allows you to connect an external ROG XG Mobile graphics card.

An invoice that lives up to the promise

Asus announces that the ROG Flow X16 will be available during the 3rd quarter of 2022 from 3199 euros. A fairly high price which can be explained by the summary of technologies present in this machine. It will of course be necessary to test this price and the promises of this product during a test.
