A mini PC in a volume of 2.5 liters, but capable of launching all the games of the moment? This is the promise of the ROG NUC. A promise that seems to cost an arm and a leg!

Not very talkative since its takeover of the Intel NUC range, ASUS has finally clarified its intentions in the field of mini-PCs dedicated to video games. An area which will therefore only concern the ROG NUC.

Inside the beast, we should find a rather very muscular configuration capable of running all the games of the moment: Intel Core Ultra 9 185H and GeForce RTX 4070 Laptop. Unfortunately, the price is scary…

During the summer of 2023, Intel surprised everyone by announcing the end of its NUC range, these mini-PCs that the American firm had put on the market ten years earlier in order to reach lovers of compactness.

In the wake of this announcement, ASUS indicated that it was taking over while Intel confirmed that it was selling its range and the brand to the Taiwanese company which, however, remained silent for several months. It was only as a prelude to CES 2024 in Las Vegas that ASUS came out of its silence and then, logically, during the show, to discuss new products.

Alongside two NUCs aimed at the professional market, there was also talk of a gaming model. Of course, the latter is presented as much stronger with a configuration that has nothing to envy of machines whose volume will be 4, 5 or even 6 times greater.

…and a price of almost 2,500 euros

Called ROG NUC and subtitled “ compact gaming power ”, the machine is planned to have no TDP limit while its two main components – the Core Ultra 9 185H and the RTX 4070 Laptop – are known to have such constraints.

Thus, the Intel processor, a Meteor Lake model, is designed for a TDP of 45 watts, but ASUS confirms that it can be used in 65W mode. For its part, the NVIDIA RTX 4070 Laptop GPU is satisfied with 115W, but ASUS specifies that the Dynamic Boost can take it up to 140W.

We don’t yet have all the details of the configuration planned by ASUS, but the ROG NUC should also integrate 32 GB of DDR5-5600 as well as a 1 TB NVMe M.2 SSD. Of course, such specifications should offer great performance, but ASUS does not intend to sell off its machine.

On the contrary, the first information on the subject – a publication by the reseller ProShop and relayed by our colleagues at VideoCardz – shows a price of 2,499 euros. To see if, at this price, the machine will manage to find its audience while the NUC already seems to be on sale.
