PHONE COMPARISON

With the ROG Phone 8 (Pro) 2024, Asus is ushering in the new generation of its gaming smartphones with the Republic of Gamers brand. We compare both models and show you how they differ.

With the ROG Phone 8 and the ROG Phone 8 Pro, Asus is bringing its own gaming smartphones up to date.

You can adjust optical details on both smartphones and both models are also quite similar in terms of hardware. However, there are differences that you should know before buying. We highlight these here.

display

The displays of both devices have a screen diagonal of 6.78 inches. They have a resolution of 2,400 x 1,080 pixels and the same refresh rate, which is variable between one Hertz and 120 Hertz and can be turned up to 165 Hertz if desired. HDR10 support and peak brightness of 2,500 nits are also available on both smartphones. Gorilla Glass Victus 2 also ensures robustness in every model.

Performance

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 ensures sufficient gaming performance on both smartphones. Since this processor is one of the most powerful chips in the Android segment, even the most modern games shouldn’t make either device sweat too quickly. If so, they both have access to an external cooling system. The battery life of both devices is also 5,500 milliamp hours.

There are differences in the memory configuration. While the ROG Phone 8 comes with 12 gigabytes of RAM and 256 gigabytes of storage, with the ROG Phone 8 Pro you have the choice between 16 gigabytes of RAM with 512 gigabytes of storage and 24 gigabytes of RAM with one terabyte of storage. The largest storage configuration also includes the external cooling system AeroActive Cooler X.

camera

In a gaming machine, the camera could easily be forgotten. However, Asus installs a triple camera in both smartphones. It consists of a main sensor with 50 megapixels and optical image stabilization, a 13 megapixel ultra-wide camera and a 32 megapixel sensor with triple optical zoom, which, like the main sensor, has optical image stabilization. A gimbal function is also available on both devices.

Accesories

The AeroActive Cooler X is recommended by Asus for both smartphones. With these accessories you can expand the cooling capacity of your smartphone. You also get a jack plug for your headphones and additional buttons. It is only included in the ROG Phone Pro with 24 gigabytes of RAM.

design

The biggest differences are in appearance. The ROG Phone 8 gives you the option to change the ROG logo color and pattern. The basic model is also available in the colors “Phantom Black” and “Rebel Grey”.

Unlike the base model, the ROG Phone 8 Pro is only available in the color “Phantom Black”. But there is another gimmick in store for you. There are 341 programmable mini LEDs on the back that can even play animations.

Price

The ROG Phone 8 Pro with 24 gigabytes of RAM, one terabyte of storage and AeroActive Cooler X is the most expensive model at 1,499 euros. The next smaller storage variant of the Pro model with 16 gigabytes of RAM and 512 gigabytes of storage costs 1,199 euros. The ROG Phone 8 is only 100 euros cheaper. Regardless of the color, it will cost you 1,099 euros together with 12 gigabytes of RAM and 256 gigabytes of storage.

Netzwelt means

If you absolutely need an external cooling system and massive RAM, you should go for the ROG Phone 8 Pro. The latest processor for the latest games is also available with the ROG Phone 8, although without mini-LEDs on the back. Since the step up to the cheapest Pro model from the basic model is relatively moderate, the device, which is 100 euros more expensive, could be worth it. In addition to the design, there are also 16 gigabytes of RAM and 512 gigabytes of storage.
