While the police are investigating, Roger Waters says they want to “silence him”.

After a controversial performance by British rock musician Roger Waters (79) on May 17 in Berlin, the police initiated proceedings. However, the musician rejects the criticism of the performance, in which the Pink Floyd co-founder wore a black uniform with a red band similar to that of an SS officer.

in an opinion, which was published on Instagram, among others, the 79-year-old speaks of “malicious attacks” by people who want to “slander and silence him”. According to him, the controversial elements of the appearance are, among other things, “clearly a statement against fascism”.

“We are investigating on suspicion of hate speech”

“We are investigating on suspicion of incitement to hatred,” said a police spokesman confirmed to “Spiegel” before the statement was published. Waters’ stage clothing was suitable “to glorify the rule of the National Socialist regime”. In addition, it could constitute a disturbance of the public peace. After the investigation is complete, the case should be handed over to the public prosecutor’s office, who will decide how to proceed. Among other things the “rbb” also reported accordingly. The US organization “Stop Antisemitism” welcomed on their Twitter page meanwhile, the investigation as “great news”.

The musician has repeatedly attracted attention in recent years for his criticism of Israel and anti-Semitic statements. His tour “This Is Not A Drill” caused unrest in Germany beforehand. The city of Frankfurt am Main wanted to cancel his concert on May 28 because of the allegations against the musician. However, the administrative court there granted Waters’ urgent application, so that the performance will take place on Sunday.
