What if the Rogue One mission ended up well for everyone? What if the heroes of the Star Wars film (broadcast tonight on TF1) had finally all got away with it?

As screenwriter Gary Whitta revealed to the site Entertainment Weekly in March 2017, in a first version of the script, Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) and Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) had indeed been spared for fear of a possible reluctance on the part of Disney in the face of the death of the two heroes:

“Our original instinct was to kill them all. It was worth it. If you have to give your life for something, give it for it, to destroy a weapon that will kill you anyway. always wanted to do. But we never explored it because we were afraid that Disney wouldn’t let us do it, that they would find it too dark for a Star Wars movie or for their brand, “ thus told Gary Whitta.

After a discussion with Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy, the end of the film in which the entire Rogue One squadron sacrifices itself for the success of the mission was finally accepted, but the “fall-back conclusion” was indeed also considered.

In this alternate ending, Bodhi Rook (Riz Ahmed), Chirrut Imwe (Donnie Yen), and Baze Malbus (Jiang Wen) were absent from the screenplay. K2-SO (Alan Tudyk) weren’t doing it, but Jyn Erso (who actually had the rank of sergeant in the Rebel Alliance) and Cassian Andor (who wasn’t called that at the time), managed to leave Scarif with the Death Star’s plans:

“A rebel ship came down and picked them up on the surface. The transfer of plans took place later. They took off and, later, Leia’s ship arrived from Alderaan to assist them. The data transfer from ship to ship had taken place. place outside of Scarif, “ explained the screenwriter.

Immediately after this transfer, the ship Jyn and Cassian were in was destroyed by Vader’s ship, and the two heroes perished in the explosion. At least that’s what the public were supposed to believe, because after the Sith Lord left, one of the ship’s floating debris revealed itself to be an escape pod, borrowed at the very last moment by the two characters.

A much less dramatic conclusion, therefore, and which could also have allowed the start of possible sequels to Rogue One, but which was finally forgotten in favor of the conclusion that we know.
