Roissy and Orly airports facing the challenge of the Olympic and Paralympic Games

Groupe ADP does not intend to make any mistakes and relive the horrors of summer 2022. At the time, disconcerted by the vigorous resumption of air transport after the Covid-19 pandemic, it was unable to avoid the endless queues waiting for exhausted tourists at airport border crossings.

From the end of July, Roissy-Charles-de-Gaulle (CDG) and Orly will form the two main gateways for the Olympic (July 26-August 11) and Paralympic (August 28-September 8) Games in Paris 2024. The vast majority of athletes, their equipment and foreign delegations will reach the French capital by plane. It is therefore these two airports which will constitute the first showcase of France.

“These Olympics are the first positive event after the Covid crisis. We want to make it an element of pride”, says Renaud Duplay, deputy general director in charge of the Games for Groupe ADP. As the opening ceremony approaches, the manager of the two airport platforms says he is ready for the event, which the CGT confirms. “For the organization, it’s not too bad”judge Daniel Bertone, general secretary of the CGT-ADP.

For the company, it is from July 18, the day of the opening of the Olympic village, that serious things will begin, with the landing of the first Olympic guests. According to his scores, these are in total nearly 64,000 accredited people – athletes, members of official delegations, but also journalists – who have already planned to arrive and then leave via CDG and Orly for the two competitions.

A challenge to put into perspective. Normally, 200,000 and 110,000 passengers respectively pass through the two airports in the Paris suburbs daily. It is therefore not so much the number of accredited people who will pass through Roissy (52,000) or Orly (12,000) that gives Groupe ADP teams a cold sweat as its concentration over a few days.

“An ephemeral organization”

“For us, the big dates are outside the event”, explains Renaud Duplay. That is to say before the start of the tests or at the end. According to him, the highlight will come after the end of the Games, “August 12, with the first big departure of the athletes”. Given the plane reservations, nearly 13,000 of them will leave Roissy the day after the closing ceremony. Essentially, departures should focus “over two to three days”before August 15, has already anticipated Groupe ADP.
