Roland-Garros: Iga Swiatek wins against Cori Gauff and wins the women’s tournament

New triumph for Iga Swiatek at Roland-Garros. Two years after her surprise victory in 2020, the Polish, now world number 1, disposed of the American Cori Gauff in the final this Saturday. A success in two sets (6-1 / 6-3), acquired in just over an hour, which gave him the second Grand Slam title of his career. She also equaled the series of 35 consecutive victories on the circuit, hitherto held by Venus Williams.

Facing Cori Gauff, only 18 years old and perhaps a little paralyzed by the event, Iga Swiatek became the first multi-titled player at Roland-Garros since Serena Williams who won her 3rd title there in 2015 and the youngest player to win two Grand Slam titles since Maria Sharapova. For his part, Gauff, who had not lost a single set of the tournament so far, will reach his best ranking on Monday, 13th in the world.

6th title in a row for Swiatek

She will have another chance to lift a trophy at Roland-Garros on Sunday in the final of the ladies’ doubles which she plays with her compatriot Jessica Pegula against the French Caroline Garcia and Kristina Mladenovic. Too nervous this Saturday, the American totally missed her start to the game. After three unforced errors and a double fault, she gave in her service game, then again in a long third game and found herself trailing 4-0.

Opposite, Swiatek had time to settle down, set up his game and gain confidence. So much so that she concluded the first set by taking her opponent’s face-off for the third time in 32 minutes. Against all expectations, it was Gauff who started the second set the best by succeeding in the break to lead 2-0. But Swiatek won the next five games and then served to wrap up the game.

35 wins in a row therefore for Swiatek but also a 6th consecutive trophy after Doha, Indian Wells, Miami, Stuttgart and Rome.
