4 years after the controversies surrounding the release of J’accuse and the 2020 Césars, Roman Polanski’s new film will be released in France. The Palace had been selected at the Venice Film Festival, but until now had no French release date.

2023, M. Abramowska

Without a distributor since its presentation at the 2023 Venice Film Festival, The Palace, Roman Polanski’s latest film, has finally found a French distributor. It is the structure Swashbuckler Films, usually specialized in re-releases of old films and in particular westerns, which acquired the distribution rights for France.

A release date in the middle of the Cannes Film Festival!

If the film cannot be presented during the Cannes Film Festival, because it has already been selected in another festival previously, the distributor has chosen a date which coincides with the 2024 edition of the Festival. The Palace will be released precisely on Wednesday May 15, 2024. For the record, the Cannes Film Festival will start the day before, May 14, 2024.

Cannes Film Festival 2024: juries, films, expected stars… Everything we know about the 77th edition!

Let us indicate that it is on this same date of May 14, 2024 that we will know the verdict of a trial involving Roman Polanski against the actress Charlotte Lewis. The latter accuses the 90-year-old director of defamation. For the record, this British actress is one of the women who denounced the actions of the director. She claims to have been “sexually abused” by the filmmaker, in the early 1980s, when she was 16. The judgment will be rendered on May 14, 2024.

A 24th feature film, shot less than 3 years after the controversial release of J’accuse

The Polanski is the 24th feature film by Roman Polanski. Filming took place in 2022, in Switzerland, in the 5-star Gstaad Palace hotel.

The plot takes the form of a closed session: in a large hotel, on the evening of December 31, 1999, at the dawn of the new millennium, the intersecting destinies of several clients and staff of this establishment located in the Swiss Alps.

In the cast, we find among the most famous personalities Fanny Ardant, John Cleese and Mickey Rourke. German actor Oliver Masucci, as well as Portuguese actor Joaquim de Almeida, complete the cast.

After a postponement of filming (previously announced for a start in fall 2021), the first clap took place during the month of March 2022, a little less than 3 years after the French release of J’ accused.

The film has already been released in several European countries, starting with Italy on September 28. It was presented out of competition in Venice in September 2023, and warmly received by critics. It will arrive in France 8 months later, on May 15, 2024.
