Valentine’s Day on February 14 is a highlight in the romance calendar for many couples. In addition to a delicious meal or time for two, the right soundtrack on the day of love can help get you in the right mood. A small selection of songs that are guaranteed to fit into a couple’s evening.
“Skinny Love” – Bon Iver
The incomparable voice of Justin Vernon (41) suits romantic hours. When the singer of the band Bon Iver sings about love in “Skinny Love” (2007), there is a certain melancholy resonating – but that’s exactly what makes the song one of the best the group has ever written.
“Tennessee Whiskey” – Chris Stapleton
A smoky voice paired with a romantic text? That’s exactly what you get in “Tennessee Whiskey” (2015) by Chris Stapleton (44). The American country music singer and Grammy winner sings about a very special person in the song. “You’re as smooth as Tennessee whiskey. You’re as sweet as strawberry wine. You’re as warm as a glass of brandy. And darling, I stay high on your love all the time.”
“White Flag” – Dido
Valentine’s Day is usually not entirely without kitsch. The artist Dido (51) wrote a song to go with it in 2003. The play is about a failed love. But the protagonist doesn’t want to give her up – even though it seems pointless. The Brit’s calm melody and silky voice make hearts beat faster. “I’m in love and always will be,” it says.
“Wonder Wall” – Oasis
A classic across the board. The British rock band Oasis were better known for their rowdy nature, but a love song of all things was to bring about the final breakthrough. “Wonderwall” (1995) has been called one of the best British songs of all time. Noel Gallagher (55) later explained that the lyrics would revolve around an imaginary friend who saves you from yourself.
“I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” – Aerosmith
If you thought “White Flag” wasn’t cheesy enough, tune in to Aerosmith’s “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing.” The song was released in 1998 and was part of the soundtrack of the film “Armageddon: Last Judgment”. In the chorus, frontman Steven Tyler (74) smashes: “I don’t want to close my eyes, I don’t want to fall asleep, because I would miss you, darling, and I don’t want to miss anything.”
“My Love Is Your Love” – Whitney Houston
The late Whitney Houston (1963-2012) managed to express her feelings with more soul. In “My Love Is Your Love”, also from 1998, she sings about great love. “If tomorrow is judgment day. And I’m on the front line. And the Lord asks me what I’ve done with my life, I’ll say I spent it with you.” Is it even more romantic?
“Thinking Out Loud” – Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran (31) is also one of the singers who has written more than one hit about love. One of his most successful is 2014’s “Thinking Out Loud.” Even non-romantic people should enjoy it.
“Your Song” – Elton John
A song helped the British superstar Elton John (75) to great success. “Your Song” (1970), written by Bernie Taupin (72), was the first big hit for the two and opened doors and gates. Taupin wrote the lyrics over breakfast, John had the melody ready in ten minutes. The song remains an absolute classic to this day.
