The Netflix platform hosts nine films worn by the iconic Romy Schneider. Among them, the sulphurous thriller “La Piscine”, in which she gives the reply to her former companion Alain Delon. A classic to quickly (re)discover.
In the spotlight with an exhibition at the Cinémathèque française until July 31, the iconic Romy Schneider is also on Netflix. The streaming platform indeed devotes a Collection to the famous actress with no less than nine films available.
Among these classics, we find the timeless thriller The swimming pool. A sulphurous work by Jacques Deray, one of five collaborations between Romy Schneider and Alain Delon, released in cinemas more than half a century ago.
La Piscine tells the story of Jean-Paul and Marianne, played on screen by Alain Delon and Romy Schneider, who form an ideal couple and spend happy days in their villa in Saint-Tropez. Until the day when Harry (Maurice Ronet), former lover of Marianne, arrives accompanied by his daughter Penelope (Jane Birkin). An irruption that will break the serene daily life of the couple…
Released in 1969, an erotic year, La Piscine, carried by the music of Michel Legrand, is a marvel of sensuality and tension. Even today, the charm operates, and it is impossible not to be fascinated by this amorous ballet for four, rich in unsaid words and silences, with an atmosphere that becomes more and more oppressive as the minutes go by. Disturbing, perverse, disturbing at times, this closed-door thriller, a great success in French cinema (2.3 million viewers), has definitely not aged a bit.
Finally, how not to mention the Schneider / Delon duo. As a bourgeois couple in the grip of boredom which sees their daily life turned upside down, they literally radiate the screen, magnified by the staging of Jacques Deray. A performance all the more fascinating as the two stars, here at the height of their beauty, were in a relationship in the city five years before the shooting. Unavoidable.
