Ron Gilbert and Devolver Digital announce Return to Monkey Island

Released in 1990 and 1991, these two point & click are among the big names in the genre for many nostalgic for the LucasArts era, or Lucasfilm Games, depending on the times. A label back in business on the AAA games front with many Star Wars games (not to mention Indiana Jones at Bethesda) but which also gave the green light to Ron Gilbert to reconnect with his offbeat filibuster universe. In preparation in secrecy for two years and announced for 2022 on unspecified platforms, Return to Monkey Island is therefore developed by the Terrible Toybox studio (with which Ron Gilbert has already released Thimbleweed Park) in partnership with Devolver Digital.

If the Monkey Island franchise has a total of five games, Return to Monkey Island presents itself as the true successor of Secret of Monkey Island and Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge, namely the only episodes certified by Ron Gilbert, who finally put away his promise that he would not retouch Monkey Island again unless he recovered the intellectual property. “All games after Monkey Island 2 do not exist in my Monkey Island universe“, had also launched the author in an interview dating from 2013.

You understood, for many, this day will remain like that of the announcement of Monkey Island 3, especially since Dave Grossman (author), Michael Land (music) and Dominic Armato (voice of Guybrush Threepwood) are also the party to ensure parentage. Missing Tim Schafer, for contractual reasons that one can imagine. And if it’s not mentioned in the announcement, let’s add that Rex Crowle (LittleBigPlanet, Tearaway, Knights and Bikes) is none other than the artistic director of the project.
