Former first lady Rosalynn Carter has died at the age of 96. There is great sadness in the USA.

Rosalynn Carter (1927-2023) is dead. The former first lady of the USA died at the age of 96, according to the non-profit organization “The Carter Center” announced on Sunday. Rosalynn Carter died peacefully surrounded by her family at her home in Plains, Georgia, the center said in a statement.

“Rosalynn has been my equal partner in everything I have ever accomplished,” said her husband, former President Jimmy Carter, 99. “As long as Rosalynn was in the world, I always knew that someone loved and supported me.”

Rosalynn Carter was in hospice care

The Carter Center announced a few days ago that the former first lady had been admitted to hospice. She was diagnosed with dementia in May. At the time it was said: “She continues to live happily at home with her husband.” For much of her life she has campaigned for mental health and against the stigma often associated with it. It is hoped that the news of Rosalynn Carter’s health could help encourage more “important conversations at kitchen tables and in doctors’ offices across the country.”

Jimmy Carter was President of the USA between 1977 and 1981. He had been married to Rosalynn since 1946. It became known in Februarythat the former US President is also receiving palliative care. After several hospital stays, Carter had decided to “spend the remaining time at home with his family and receive hospice care in lieu of additional medical procedures.”

Bidens and Obamas mourn

US President Joe Biden (81) and First Lady Jill Biden (72) released a statement on Sundayin which they recalled, among other things, that Rosalynn Carter “inspired a nation and the world.”

Former First Lady Michelle Obama (59) paid tribute to Rosalynn – also on behalf of her husband Barack Obama (62). also in a post on X (formerly Twitter). Rosalynn Carter used her platform “in deeply meaningful ways,” she wrote. “Her groundbreaking work to combat the stigmatization of people struggling with their mental health brought light to so many who suffer in silence,” Obama continued.
