Roth in the “early start”: “Weapons deliveries make the difference”

“Arms deliveries make the difference”

So far, Russia has not achieved any of its war goals, says SPD foreign policy expert Michael Roth on “ntv Frühstart”. This is also due to western arms deliveries. He therefore demands that they be continued continuously.

The chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee, Michael Roth, does not consider Russia superior in the Ukraine war. There is a realistic chance that Ukraine will survive the war as a free, democratic country while maintaining its territorial integrity, the SPD politician explained in “ntv Frühstart”. “Russia has so far not achieved any of its war goals,” said Roth. This was made possible above all by the help of the West. “Our arms shipments from the West make a big difference,” Roth said. He calls for these arms deliveries to be continued: “Ukraine doesn’t stand a chance without the support of modern Western equipment.”

Chancellor Olaf Scholz has assured Ukraine that he will help the country with supplies for as long as it is necessary, emphasized Roth. All western partner states must live up to this responsibility. “We have to check every day what we can still achieve,” said the SPD politician. But he also referred to the limited resources of the federal government: “It is also well known that the possibilities of the Bundeswehr are limited – but something was always found.”

Roth welcomed the fact that NATO is likely to be expanded to include Sweden and Finland: “That strengthens us all.” According to the SPD politician, NATO’s northern expansion is a clear stop sign from the West against Russia’s aggression. Before that, however, both states had to sign a memorandum with Turkey to prevent Ankara from vetoing it. “Of course it is difficult to achieve trusting cooperation under such conditions,” emphasized the foreign policy expert. Roth therefore appealed to the cohesion of the alliance partners: “The only one who benefits from a dispute within NATO is Putin – and we must not allow that.”
