As expected, the Swiss are eliminated from the European Volleyball Championship after the historic round of 16. The balance is still positive.
After the historic round of 16 entry into the European Championship, the first round of the knockout phase meant the final stop for the Swiss volleyball players. The team lost 3-0 in Florence against the heavily favored Dutch women. If the Swiss, who had been at eye level at times in the second round, scored 17 and 19 points in the first two sets, the air was out in the end. The Netherlands got the final set with 25:12.
The Swiss women wore black ribbons to commemorate the late beach volleyball pioneer Martin Laciga. After a (20-second) minute of mourning before the game, it quickly became clear: In order to be able to stand up to the Dutch women, Switzerland would need a perfect game. This illusion quickly dissipated. Only in the middle section, when everything seemed possible at 17:18, did the Netherlands have to shift up a gear – which “Oranje” managed to do immediately.
Positive balance despite out
The bottom line is that the Swiss women can still draw a consistently positive balance from this European Championship. Above all, surviving the group phase for the first time at the third attempt was a surprising and historic success for the team, which only moved up after Russia was excluded from the 24 finals participants, against consistently higher-ranked opponents.
For national coach Lauren Bertolacci, however, the development is not yet complete. “The team, which mostly stays together, definitely has more potential. And the next big goal will be qualifying for the World Cup for the first time.”
