Group F: victories for Leipzig and Real
- Shakhtar Donetsk – RB Leipzig 0: 4
Thanks to a confident 4-0 win at Shakhtar Donetsk (the game was played in Warsaw), Leipzig qualified for the round of 16. In the 10th minute, Christopher Nkunku gave the Saxons the lead. After the change of sides, André Silva scored a curious 2-0, after a confusing situation he pushed the ball over the line with his shin for an early decision (50th). Later, Dominik Szoboszlai (62′) and an own goal by Valeriy Bondar (68′) made things clear. After all, the Ukrainians will continue in the Europa League next year.
- Real Madrid 5-1 Celtic
Two penalties put Real Madrid on the road to victory early on. First Luka Modric converted (6th), later Rodrygo was allowed to play from the point (21st). Celtic were also awarded a penalty 10 minutes before the break. But because Thibaut Courtois parried Josip Juranovic’s attempt, the Glasgow team was denied a goal. In the second round, the Madrilenians started the gala. Marco Asensio (51st), Vinicius Junior (61st) and Federico Valverde (71st) scored every 10 minutes. Jota’s beautiful free kick for Celtic shortly before the end was only a cosmetic result. Real secures the group victory, Celtic is eliminated.
Group H: Juve take positives from the 5th defeat
- Juventus – Paris SG 1:2
Three poor points are enough for the “old lady” to extend her European Cup campaign. The Italians, who have been counted on all season, suffered their fifth defeat in the group stage – the fourth by just one goal. At the home stadium, Leonardo Bonucci equalized against Paris SG in the 39th minute after Kylian Mbappé had launched the guests as requested (13th). Nuno Mendes (69th) finally gave the French the victory in the game. But not those in the group: This goes to Benfica – after 14 points and a goal difference of 16:7, the higher number of away goals scored is decisive.
- Maccabi Haifa 1-6 Benfica
Juventus could count on the continued uncompetitiveness of Maccabi Haifa and Benfica Lisbon to advance. The Portuguese won 6:1 as a result of an increase run after the change of sides and their persistence. The home team could only briefly dream of a European winter when Tjaronn Chery (26th) sunk a penalty to make it 1-1.
Group G: Only Man City defies the draw
- Copenhagen – Borussia Dortmund 1:1
BVB drew in Denmark’s metropolis for the third time in a row in the CL group stage. In the 1-1 away win against FC Copenhagen, who were eliminated prematurely from the European Cup, the Swiss keeper Gregor Kobel had to give his place to deputy Alexander Meyer in the second half, despite a strong performance, but due to precautionary measures. At this point, the result of the shot was already certain – Hakon Arnar Haraldsson had countered the lead through Thorgan Hazard (23rd) shortly before the break and thus defeated Kobel just before his early end of the day.
- Manchester City – Sevilla 3:1
Victory in Pool G goes to Manchester City. The Premier League representative (without the injured Manuel Akanji) maintained his unbeaten run in the current “premier class” season thanks to a 3-1 win at the Etihad Stadium. And thanks to a final effort, England – like Dortmund – avoided stringing together the third draw. Rico Lewis (52′), Julian Alvarez (73′) and Riyad Mahrez (83′) managed to turn the game from 0-1 to 3-1 after the break.
