Group B: Pale Dutch dive in France

  • France – Netherlands 4:0

With his pink hair, Antoine Griezmann could not be overlooked in the Stade de France anyway. In the game against the Netherlands, the 32-year-old didn’t need any time to put his stamp on the game. Less than two minutes had been played when he started his opening goal to make it 1-0 by winning the ball in midfield. A little later Dayot Upamecano pushed the ball over the line after a Griezmann free kick (8′). The visibly unsettled Dutchmen conceded the next goal after 20 minutes. After a major voting error, Captain Kylian Mbappé had an easy time closing the sack. The star striker doubled after the break. Symbolic of a bad performance, Memphis Depay missed a penalty in injury time.

  • Gibraltar – Greece 0:3

Group F: Lukaku shoots down Sweden

In Qatar, Romelu Lukaku was still the scapegoat for Belgium’s early out. In the first serious fight since the World Cup debacle, he showed why he is the Belgian record goalscorer. The beefy striker scored all three goals in the clear away win against Sweden. First he scored with his head (35′), then he followed up with two more goals from close range (49’/83′). Sweden remained pale even after returning Zlatan Ibrahimovic was substituted on. After all, the 41-year-old became the oldest player ever to play in a European Championship qualifier.

Austria fulfilled their obligation to start against Azerbaijan with a clear home win. The home team made the preliminary decision with a double strike after about half an hour: First, Captain Marcel Sabitzer put the home team in the lead before Michael Gregoritsch doubled. Sabitzer was responsible for the highlight of the evening. He sunk a free kick in the 50th minute to make it 3-0.

Group E: Czech Republic’s lightning start

The Czech Republic made a real lightning start in the duel between the two group favorites against Poland. After just 27 seconds, Ladislav Krejci brought his colors into the lead. The 30-year-old headed a long throw into the net. Less than two minutes later, the ball landed in the goal again. This time Tomas Cvancara, who was playing his first cap for the Czech Republic, was the scorer. Jan Kuchta finally put the lid on after about an hour.
