Round-up Nations League – Morata shoots Spain to final tournament – Serbia rises – Sport

  • Spain wins 1-0 in the Swiss Group 2 of League A in Portugal and qualifies for the final tournament.
  • In League B, Serbia wins 2-0 in Norway and is thus a clear climber. Scotland also made it into the top league.
  • Sweden and Armenia have to go into League C.
  • Switzerland beats the Czech Republic 2-1 and stays in League A.

In the Swiss Group 2, Spain qualified for the final tournament of the Nations League. In the “final” for first place, coach Luis Enrique’s team beat Portugal 1-0 in Braga and thus overtook the Portuguese. As usual, the Spaniards dominated the game, but they hardly achieved anything offensively for a long time. The hosts, for whom a draw would have been enough to win the group, had the better chances, but could not succeed either. Only shortly before the end did Spain manage to get the lucky punch. Alvaro Morata scored in the 88th minute after a pass by Nico Williams.

League B, Group 4: Serbia wins final in Norway

Norway and Serbia went into the showdown for promotion to the top division with equal points. A draw would have been enough for the Scandinavians, the Serbs had to win. And the Swiss group opponents at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar were able to fulfill this task. Dusan Vlahovic gave the visitors the lead in the 42nd minute. Aleksander Mitrovic made the preliminary decision in the 54th minute. While Serbia is promoted to League A, the Norwegians around superstar Erling Haaland remain second-class.

Sweden needed a win in their home game against Slovenia to stay in League B. But it was the Slovenians who provided the first exclamation mark. Benjamin Sesko was found with a long ball down the left side of the box. The striker volleyed and scored from a tight angle to make it 1-0. Emil Forsberg was able to equalize for the Swedes before the break, but that was all they could do.

Ireland remains in League B. The Irish celebrated a 3-2 home win against Armenia in a direct duel for relegation. The hosts took a 2-0 lead through John Egan and Michael Obafemi, the Armenians equalized thanks to a double strike from Artak Dashyan and Eduard Spertsyan (71’/73′). The crucial scenes happened shortly before the end. The Irish were awarded a hand penalty and 2 Armenians were sent off. Robbie Brady converted the penalty kick to 3:2.
