Biel – ZSC Lions 1: 3 (series: 3: 3)
The ZSC Lions have to thank savior Denis Hollenstein: With two goals in the final phase, the man from Zurich turned the game against Biel single-handedly and thus forced the decisive 7th game in this series. The people of Biel will be angry about this defeat. They had been the dominant team for practically the entire game and recorded significantly more shots on target. But apart from Damien Brunner’s lightning goal after just 39 seconds to make it 1-0, the Seelanders simply couldn’t get past ZSC goalie Jakub Kovar.
Hollenstein did that twice in the 54th and 55th minute: he didn’t give Biel goalie Dmitri Schikin a chance with his goals to make it 1-1 and 2-1. The whole hall in Biel went into shock, as did the players on the ice, who were no longer able to react to being behind. Shortly before the final siren, Reto Schäppi scored in the empty goal. With this turnaround behind them, the people of Zurich will be able to climb into the “Belle” on Monday in the Hallenstadion with a lot of self-confidence.
Lakers – Davos 2: 3 a.e.t. (series: 3: 2)
With unbelievable morale and a little bit of luck in the competition, the team from Davos were also able to prevent their early end of the season. Kristian Pospisil scored the victorious 3:2 for the Grisons in the 84th minute of the second overtime. The game was similar to the Biel – ZSC duel in a striking way: Just like Biel, the Lakers dominated for long stretches, but failed to build up a large cushion – and therefore lost in the end.
They were 2-0 up until the 58th minute thanks to goals from Nico Dünner (30′) and Dominic Lammer (49′). But that wasn’t enough against the self-sacrificing team from Davos. So it happened that HCD was able to equalize somewhat surprisingly to make it 2-2 shortly before the end: Matej Stransky (58th) and Andres Ambühl (59th) defeated the Lakers keeper Melvin Nyffeler within just 39 seconds. In the extra time, the teams showed a certain tiredness, but Pospisil prevented Rapperswil-Jona from qualifying for the semi-finals with his goal. So this duel goes into the 6th game on Monday, the Lakers then have the 3rd chance to advance.
