The edited photo of Catherine, Princess of Wales, 42, recently caused a sensation on the occasion of Mother’s Day. Such a scandal was unthinkable around 70 years ago, when a picture was taken of eight-year-old Prince Charles with his sister, Princess Anne, 73, that of Princess Margaret, †71, later husband Antony Armstrong-Jones, 1st Earl of Snowdon , shot in 1956. In addition to around 150 other photographs, this one is also part of the exhibition “Royal Portraits: A Century of Photographs”.

Exhibition features iconic portraits of the Royal Family

From May 17, 2024, the exhibition in the King’s Gallery at Buckingham Palace offers a look behind the palace walls and shows famous portraits of the Royal Family. There will also be some previously unpublished pictures, including the beautiful moment between the current King Charles, 75, and his younger sister in the picture gallery at Buckingham Palace. It was a commissioned work on the occasion of his eighth birthday.

“I think the children had fun posing,” says exhibition curator Alessandro Nasini in an interview with “Hello”. “It’s always exciting to share this kind of material with visitors. I love how the young photographer, who was only 26 at the time, plays with the children and their reflections in the mirrored doors.”

Previously unreleased photos of Queen Elizabeth and Princess Margaret

Images from famous photographers such as Cecil Beaton and Dorothy Wilding are also shown, including one of 16-year-old Princess Elizabeth, †96, in a blazer with a diamond brooch in the shape of the Grenadier Guards regimental badge and cap badge to mark her appointment as colonel in the year Celebrate 1942. Another eye-catcher is a romantic portrait of Princess Elizabeth’s younger sister, Princess Margaret, posing in a tulle dress decorated with sequined butterflies for her 19th birthday. Much more intimate and revealing, however, is the portrait that Lord Snowdon took of his loved one 18 years later. “Princess Margaret is shown here as a glamorous, sophisticated woman – of great beauty,” says the expert. “At this point, Princess Margaret and Snowdon are in their seventh year of marriage and are parents to two young children.”

“Royal Portraits: A Century of Photographs” celebrates a century of royal portrait photography and reveals the stories behind the royals’ extraordinary photographs from state occasions to more private family moments. The curator spent three years combing the royal archives for suitable treasures. “I was spoiled for choice because the Royal Collection has such a wealth of portrait photography,” said Nasini. “I believe the royal family has recognized the importance of photography over the past century and how its immediacy can appeal to everyone, no matter where they are in the world.”
