The Basel drummers “Top Secret” were allowed to play for the Queen in Windsor on Sunday evening. This at the start of her 70th anniversary of the throne.

A big moment for the small Swiss drummer formation. They were allowed to play for Queen Elizabeth II at the platinum jubilee party on Sunday night. The gala show with riders, soldiers and musicians from all over the world lasted almost three hours.

The drummers practiced for their five-minute performance for two months. And even in the afternoon before the show, the Swiss say: practice, practice, practice. Because they are the only amateur formation that is allowed to perform at the gala. All other drummers are professional musicians. A great honor for the “Top Secret” drummer: “To be honest, I’ve never really been fascinated by a princess or a queen. But standing there now, on the Queen’s and the Royal Family’s premises, it’s very nice. Great!” says the Basel drum king, Nicolas Gehrig.

To be honest, I was never really fascinated by a princess or a queen. But standing there now, on the Queen’s and the Royal Family’s premises, it’s very nice. Great!

This isn’t the first time the “Top Secret” drummers have been to Windsor. They were allowed to perform at the Royal Alber Hall in London for the Queen’s 90th birthday. It seems as if the Basel drummers left a lasting impression back then.

The drum and horse lover

A big secret is kept about the preferences of the Queen. It is known that she loves horses more than anything. The Windsor Horse Show is therefore particularly close to her heart. Over the decades, the 96-year-old has not missed a show – not even this Friday.

The drum music also seems to be heard by the Queen. One of the Basel drummers says: “It’s not officially confirmed, but it’s said that the Queen wanted it.”

Hundreds of contributors from across the Commonwealth performed at the Gallop Through History. The Basel drummers even twice – together with the “Royal Marines”. To the particular delight of the Queen, who beamed from ear to ear on Sunday, matching her ice-blue sequined dress.
